About Me
My name is Jenea, and I deal in words. When I see something beautiful, I want to describe it, with the most lovely, surprising, yet pared-down language possible. And when I read a piece of writing that's full of errors, or that could be made simpler with a few nips and tucks, I long for a red marker. It's how I see the world, ready with adjectives in my holster like a literary cowgirl. My goal is to use that skill/passion/idiosyncrasy to tell stories and help others tell theirs.
With a degree in creative writing and history, and a current MFA candidate at Bennington Writing Seminars, I have over a decade of experience as a freelance writer in varied styles of writing and editing: fiction, personal essay, scriptwriting, academic, blog, and copy. This wide range of work has kept me versatile, my writing muscles loose. Before this, I passed on my knowledge as a literacy program coordinator in inner-city Los Angeles, and I currently help both teens and adults navigate the wilds of the written word as a creative writing instructor at the Lawrence Arts Center.
I live in Lawrence, KS with my husband, three children, and a dog named Clementine.
“Telling a story is like reaching into a granary full of wheat and drawing out a handful. There is always more to tell than can be told.”
